We've guided small groups here for over a decade, so we know which pass to take at sunset and where the whales come closest to shore.

Into the cold

Dawn swims in the tidal pools of False Bay, before the wind picks up and the day-trippers arrive. The Atlantic side sits around 12 °C even in summer; the bay side is kinder. Either way, you'll talk about it all week.

Four things we'd never skip

  • A southern right whale's tail lifting above a grey sea

    Overberg · Jul – Nov

    Whales from the cliffs

Southern rights calve in Walker Bay, often close enough to hear them breathe from the path.

  • Yellow and white wildflowers carpeting a valley below sandstone mountains

West Coast · Aug – Sep

    The flower weeks

For a few weeks after the winter rain, the valleys below the Cederberg turn orange, white and gold.

  • Rows of green vines beneath a jagged mountain peak

    Winelands · Feb – Apr

    Harvest by bicycle

Gravel farm roads between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, lunch under oaks, a van for the bottles.

  • Forested cliffs falling to turquoise water and rust-coloured rocks

Garden Route · Oct – Apr

    Forest to the sea

Old yellowwoods, river mouths and lagoons, walked in short stages with a boat to carry the bags.

The slow road
seven days

Our most-booked route: the Peninsula, the vineyards and the whale coast, then up over the mountains into the Klein Karoo. Never more than four hours behind the wheel.

Route 62 through the Klein Karoo, with farm-stall pie stops on the way.

We'd been to Cape Town twice and never seen any of this. Day four, sitting on the cliffs with a whale fifty metres out, I finally put my phone away.
